Milagro! (?)

Friends, you know that I like to keep up on the latest toast trends, so check this out: a toaster that toasts the image of Jesus onto your bread!



Technically, it's a sandwich press, although the result is still toasty goodness! Here's their video from Kickstarter, since they're using it to get funding for their grilled cheese product:

Cheese + Jam = Love

I recently came across this great article on Semiswede (Motto: "sort of about Sweden, and sort of not"). In any case, the author wrestles with the appropriateness of putting cheese and jam on toast, and to that, I can only say:

"I propose a toast... to toast with jam and cheese!"

One of my favorite breakfasts: Peanut Butter, Honey, and Banana on one slice,
and Cheese and Blueberry Jam on the other.

Toast, Costa Rican Style


In the past few years, I've eaten about 50% of my toast this way. In Costa Rica, rice and beans is called "Gallo Pinto," and it's cooked with a famous (at least here) sauce called "salsa Lizano." It's often served with heavy sour cream called natilla on the top. In this case, I accompanied my gallo pinto with an omelet and a bit of tomato.

Sitztoast Goes Hipster! (Or does it??)

I recently started using Instagram. It's a great tool for getting interesting pictures of landscapes, architecture, and people, but when it comes to food, it's hard not to have your photos turn out looking like something from a 1970s picture menu from the Soviet Union. Case in point:

Toast with tomato, cream cheese, basil, and pepper.
 
Toast with refried beans and cheese.

The toaster itself.

In real life, all of these looked great and tasted delicious, but when processed with various strange filters, the result looks like something you'd feel guilty feeding to the dog. I may have to stick with my nice camera when it comes to toast pictures. Or do you, dear reader, have any suggestions?

Colorado Toast Pictorial!

We recently went to Colorado, and the toast flowed like water filled with bread crumbs! Feast your eyes on these pictures and see for yourself:


My folks know how to toast bread properly. A nice, white KitchenAid toaster will do the trick real nicely... wait a minute, what's that I see on the bread bag?


"Great Harvest Bread Company"?? Aha! I knew it! As I predicted a few weeks ago in a previous post, my mom may be scheming to make her own toast blog, toasting only Great Harvest Bread Company bread! In fact, one of the first things mom said when we got home was that if we were looking for something tasty for breakfast, there was some good whole-grain bread in the freezer. We'll see how this story develops, but if Ma Sitzman starts her own toast blog, this good, old-fashioned mom-and-pop Toastblog may be doomed! Ironically, the mom-and-pop Toastblog in this scenario is a son-and-daughter-in-law Toastblog, and it would be a mom with her international conglomerate, backed by the military-toast complex, that would be issuing the hostile takeover of this humble little blog. Stay tuned!


In the end, though, that was some damn fine toast! Strawberry cream cheese on one slice and peanut butter with honey on the other? It's time to say those three, magical words: "What a country!"

Sitztoast: It's Not Just For Sitzmans Anymore!

You may be wondering, "Is Sitztoast only for Sitzmans? Isn't that discriminatory?"

Good question, reader. When Sitztoast was founded, it was envisioned as a place where Sitzmans --all Sitzmans-- could hang out, relax, and talk about toast. I think it's certainly served that purpose in its life so far, but I don't want to be elitist! If Germans call beer "liquid bread," then I call toast "crunchy alcohol," aka, "The People's Food"! Sitztoast can't just be for Sitzmans anymore--it should be for everyone who loves toast! Therefore, I'm opening Sitztoast up to the general public. Now's your chance to see, hear, experience, talk about, and taste all the toast that you've heard the Sitzmans talk so much about!

"An Overwhelming Success" - With One Big Question Mark

Thus far, some members of the Sitzman family have signed on to Sitztoast, but not all of them.
The identity of one of the non-Sitztoast-fans has been obscured to protect her anonymity.
The dogs also like toast, but due to Facebook's racist anti-canine policies, are unable to become fans.

"An Overwhelming Success" -- That's what critics are saying about Sitztoast, as well as its related Facebook fan page. One notes the abundance of Sitzmans in the fan roster, yet thus far the matriarch of the publisher's family, Phylis, has yet to become a fan. Despite being a vital toast-provider in her children's lives (toast with cinnamon and sugar, toast with butter and jelly, and Cinnamon Toast Crunch cereal, to name but a few examples), their mother has thus far proven reluctant to become a fan of Sitztoast. Is she really a secret toast-hater? Is she saving her support for her own toast blog, based entirely on the Great Harvest Bread Company bread that she claims to love to toast?

We'll have to see how this story develops, and we'll also be following whether Ryan's wife's controversial decision to opt out of "liking" Sitztoast will cause ripples at an upcoming family reunion.

A Touchy Toast Question

In the 90s, everyone asked each other two questions:

1. Boxers or Briefs?
2. Upright Toaster or Toaster Oven?

I'm pretty sure that Tupac and Biggie's killings were linked to the latter question, but I can't seem to find reference to it on Wikipedia.

Toast With Fried Cheese and Gallo Pinto


Now THIS is what I call an after-school special! When Angela and I got back from teaching our evening classes we had a bit of a nibble... including toast, of course. Also a bit of fried cheese and some gallo pinto, which is Spanish for "Uppity Costa Rican word for rice and beans." Plus lemon.

When people see the background picture on this blog, they often ask me, 
"Hey, is that barley or wheat in that field?" 
The answer is "Yes, it is!"


It's called "Amber Waves of Grain" where I come from, and they're here to stay. This is basically toast, when it's just a twinkle in its father's eye.

LET THE TOAST BEGIN!


Here we have a lovely dinner of whole-wheat toast, cream cheese, pineapple slices, and black beans. It's where Mexico meets Hawaii, and introduces it to its friend Philadelphia.
